OASIS status request: how to find out whether and by whom you are blocked
Rules with provision and primary source, values per casino with source.
Anyone turned away at the entrance of a Spielbank, or suddenly unable to bet with a sportsbook, first wants to know two things: whether an entry exists and who made it. Both are answered by the status request (Sperrauskunft) of the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt, which keeps the nationwide OASIS block register for all German states. According to RP Darmstadt, the request gives you „eine Auskunft darüber, ob Sie gesperrt sind und wenn ja, wer die Sperre eingetragen hat“ (information on whether you are blocked and, if so, who entered the block).
One player asked on gutefrage.net: „Kann man irgendwie herausfinden, warum man gesperrt ist?“ (Is there any way to find out why you are blocked?) The legal basis is § 23 (7) of the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021) and Art. 15 GDPR, sources as of 07.10.2026. How operators without a connection to the system differ is covered in the overview of casinos without OASIS.
Applying for a status request
RP Darmstadt lists three formal requirements for the request.
- Written application with a handwritten signature. The application is made by the person whose status is in question.
- Copy of an identity document. National ID card, passport or foreign passport; a driving licence is explicitly not enough.
- Form „SpSS“. RP links to an online form on the administrative portal hessendante.hessen.de; the page „Auskunft aus dem Sperrsystem“ leads straight to it.
This is not a one-click check with a result on screen: even online, signature and ID copy are required, and the answer comes from the authority. RP names no other way for players to check. RP also draws a clear line: the status request is not meant for questions about pending applications. The progress of a requested lifting is checked by e-mail or service phone.
What operators see: only blocked or not blocked
Many questions arise because the venue gives no reason. That is down to the procedure: according to RP Darmstadt, operators query OASIS with surname, first name and date of birth, and the answer is only „Der Spieler ist nicht gesperrt“ (the player is not blocked) or „Der Spieler ist gesperrt“ (the player is blocked). Staff do not see the reason, the duration or the reporting body. A player turned away at a Tipico shop wrote: „er konnte mir keine Auskunft geben wegen Datenschutz“ (he could not tell me anything because of data protection). The reply to the same question said bwin or bet365 had registered him in OASIS after he closed his accounts there.
This is exactly the gap the status request closes, because it names the body that entered the block. Many can enter one: amusement arcades, Spielbanken, sportsbooks, online casinos, lotteries with more than two draws a week and RP itself; in total RP lists eleven groups of operators. Where the block applies and where it does not, for example for Lotto or abroad, is explained on the page about where the OASIS block applies; a block from an online sportsbook also applies at the entrance of a Spielbank.
Online, operators licensed by the Joint Gambling Authority of the German States (GGL) query under § 8 (3) GlüStV 2021 immediately before the first game starts; identification comes before the check. What sets a German casino licence apart from a foreign licence and how the GGL whitelist is structured is explained on its own page.
Blocked without knowing it
„ich habe noch nie Casino gespielt wieso werde ich dann gesperrt ?“ (I have never played in a casino, so why am I blocked?), asked one user after his first visit to a Spielbank. Another was turned away at the entrance in Hamburg.
The law knows two routes into the register. A self-exclusion is based on one's own application, including an account block with an operator. A third-party block is entered by an operator, or by RP at the request of third parties, where under § 8a (1) GlüStV 2021 there are indications that the person is at risk of gambling addiction or over-indebted, does not meet financial obligations, or risks stakes out of proportion to income or assets. Before a third-party block, § 8a (3) requires that the person be given the opportunity to comment.
Under § 8a (5) the entering body must inform the person without delay in text form that a block has been entered, and explain how to end it. Anyone who never received such a letter or e-mail can use the status request to find out who should have sent the notice. If surname or date of birth do not match the ID at the time of entry, the block does not take effect according to RP; the status request shows only what is stored under one's own ID data.
Access request under Art. 15 GDPR
Besides the request to RP, the general right of access under the General Data Protection Regulation applies. § 23 (7) GlüStV 2021 makes clear that information from the authority keeping the register is available „unbeschadet“ (without prejudice to) the right under Art. 15 GDPR. Art. 15 concerns the stored personal data themselves. Which data these can be is set out in § 23 (1):
- surname, first names, birth name and aliases or false names
- date and place of birth
- address
- photographs, which according to RP are not yet stored but are planned
- reason and duration of the block and the reporting body
- the documents that led to the block
Anyone who wants to know not only whether and by whom, but also for what reason and for how long they were blocked can refer to these data categories. Deletion cannot be achieved through the GDPR, however: according to RP, lifting is only possible under the Interstate Treaty on Gambling. What the application looks like, which deadlines apply and how long processing takes according to players is covered on the page on how to lift an OASIS block.
According to RP, OASIS passes no data to other credit or information systems such as Schufa. After lifting, the block is no longer visible to operators; under § 23 (5) the data are deleted six years after the block ends, while RP phrases it as „sechs Jahre nach Aufhebung“ (six years after lifting).
After the status request: duration and next steps
Once it is clear who entered the block, the next question is usually when it ends. According to RP, a block does not end automatically when time runs out, even if a period was stated at entry. The recorded duration only determines when an application to lift it becomes admissible. The rule is one year; a self-exclusion can be shorter, but not under three months, and a third-party block runs for at least one year. The options up to an indefinite block are explained on the page on OASIS block duration.
Asking about someone else runs into a limit. A user wrote on gutefrage.net: „ich würde gerne herausfinden ob jemand gesperrt ist“ (I would like to find out whether someone is blocked). RP describes the status request as information on „ob Sie gesperrt sind“ (whether you are blocked), with the signature and ID copy of the applicant; the status query with name and date of birth is a procedure for connected operators. Relatives who want a block for another person file their own third-party block application with form „SpSF“ and supporting evidence.
The OASIS status request is often confused with a „lugas abfrage“. LUGAS is the GGL's limit and activity file. According to GGL, anyone who cannot play with a licensed operator is often not blocked but still set as active with another operator, for example through an open browser tab. Operators must set the player inactive on request. GGL helps only with the operator name and player ID (LUGAS ID, up to 127 characters, shown in the player account profile).
Contacting OASIS at RP Darmstadt
For questions about player blocks, RP Darmstadt gives the e-mail address [email protected] and the service phone +49 6151 12 8611. Phone hours are Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 and Thursdays from 13:00 to 15:00. The status request itself is made in writing via form „SpSS“; phone and e-mail do not replace the signature and ID copy. The details on the RP website are authoritative, as of 07.10.2026.
Anyone who wants to keep the block has nothing further to do after the status request. Free counselling on gambling addiction is offered, according to GGL, by the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) on 0800 1 37 27 00, Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 22:00 and Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.

Frequently asked questions about the OASIS status request
How do I find out whether I am blocked in OASIS?
With a status request to the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt: form „SpSS“, handwritten signature and a copy of your national ID card or passport. The answer states whether a block exists and who entered it.
Is there an online OASIS check?
The application can be filed via the administrative portal hessendante.hessen.de. Signature and ID copy are still mandatory, and the answer comes from RP. RP names no other check for players.
Why does the casino not tell me the reason for the block?
When querying with surname, first name and date of birth, operators only receive the answer „blocked“ or „not blocked“. They do not see the reason, the duration or the reporting body.
Can I check whether another person is blocked?
RP describes the status request as information about one's own status, with the signature and ID of the applicant. Relatives can apply for a third-party block instead.
Can you play Lotto despite an OASIS block?
According to RP, lotteries held more than twice a week are connected. RP does not count lotteries with at most two draws a week among the connected operators.
Can I have the block deleted under the GDPR?
No. Art. 15 GDPR grants a right of access, but according to RP lifting is governed solely by the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021.
Does the OASIS block show up at Schufa?
No. According to RP Darmstadt, OASIS passes no data to other information systems such as Schufa.
Can I use the status request to ask about my pending lifting application?
No. According to RP, the status request is not meant for questions about pending applications. For that there is the e-mail [email protected] and the service phone +49 6151 12 8611.
